Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of traditional use in supporting the adrenal glands, particularly in systems like Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, where it is believed to help restore "Qi" and support the body's stress response. From a scientific perspective, licorice contains glycyrrhizin, a compound that inhibits the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2. This inhibition leads to increased levels of cortisol in the body by preventing its conversion to cortisone, thereby potentially supporting adrenal function in states of low cortisol (such as adrenal insufficiency or Addison’s disease). Some clinical case studies and small trials have shown that licorice can help prolong the effects of endogenous and exogenous corticosteroids, which lends some support to its use in adrenal fatigue or insufficiency. However, the evidence is limited and primarily based on biochemical mechanisms and anecdotal reports rather than large-scale clinical trials. Overuse of licorice can lead to significant side effects such as hypertension, hypokalemia, and edema due to its mineralocorticoid-like effects. While there is some scientific rationale for licorice’s use in adrenal support, the evidence is not robust, and its safety profile necessitates caution.
