Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Maca (Lepidium meyenii), sometimes referred to as "Macaenes" in the context of its active compounds, has a long history of traditional use in the Andes for promoting energy, stamina, and overall vitality. In traditional Peruvian herbal medicine, maca was valued as a tonic for enhancing endurance and helping the body adapt to stress, which overlaps conceptually with modern ideas about adrenal support. However, the specific claim that maca supports adrenal gland function is not strongly rooted in scientific evidence. Some preliminary studies and animal research suggest that maca may help regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which controls stress responses, but direct evidence for effects on the adrenal glands themselves in humans is lacking. Most human studies focus on maca’s effects on mood, energy, and sexual health rather than direct adrenal support. Thus, while its traditional use as an adaptogen suggests a role in supporting the body's stress response (and, by extension, the adrenal system), clinical data substantiating this specific action are limited. In summary, maca’s use for adrenal support is primarily justified by traditional practices, with only modest scientific support to date.
