Evidence supporting the use of: Macamides
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Macamides are bioactive compounds unique to the root of Lepidium meyenii, commonly known as maca. Maca root has a long history of use in traditional Peruvian medicine, where it has been consumed to promote energy, vitality, and resilience to stress. These effects are often interpreted as supporting the adrenal glands, which play a central role in the body's stress response by producing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. While animal and in vitro studies have shown that macamides may influence endocannabinoid signaling and could potentially have neuroprotective and mood-enhancing effects, direct evidence regarding their support of adrenal gland function is limited. No clinical trials specifically demonstrate that macamides support adrenal health in humans. Thus, while the traditional use of maca as an adaptogen forms the primary basis for associating macamides with adrenal support, scientific validation is preliminary, and more research is required to confirm these effects. Current evidence does not strongly support the use of macamides for direct adrenal gland support beyond traditional claims.
