Yerba Mate (Ilex paraguariensis), commonly referred to simply as “Mate,” has been traditionally used in South America as a stimulating beverage, often consumed to combat fatigue and enhance mental alertness. The traditional link to “adrenal support” is generally based on its caffeine content, which can provide temporary energy and reduce sensations of tiredness. Culturally, Mate has been used by indigenous peoples and later adopted widely throughout countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay for its invigorating properties.
However, there is little direct scientific evidence specifically connecting Mate to the support or restoration of adrenal gland function. Most claims about adrenal support relate to its stimulatory effects and anecdotal reports of increased alertness and resilience to fatigue, which are not the same as supporting the health or function of the adrenal glands themselves. Some laboratory studies have investigated Mate’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but these findings do not directly translate to adrenal health. Thus, while Mate is used in traditional contexts for energy and alertness—which are sometimes associated with adrenal health—there is insufficient clinical research to substantiate these claims beyond its established role as a stimulant.
