Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mushrooms, particularly adaptogenic varieties such as reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis), and maitake (Grifola frondosa), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for supporting vitality and resilience to stress, which are linked to adrenal gland function. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these mushrooms are considered to tonify "qi" and support the body’s ability to handle physical and mental stressors. This is conceptually related to adrenal health, as the adrenal glands play a key role in the stress response through hormone production (e.g., cortisol, adrenaline).

However, while there is a substantial tradition behind their use for overall vitality and stress adaptation, direct scientific evidence specifically linking mushroom supplementation to measurable improvements in adrenal gland function in humans is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that certain mushroom extracts might modulate stress hormones and have adaptogenic properties, but human clinical trials directly measuring adrenal hormone output or adrenal function remain scarce. Therefore, while mushrooms are traditionally used to support systems associated with the adrenal glands, robust scientific validation is lacking, resulting in a moderate evidence score.
