Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Polygonatum kingianum, commonly known as King Solomon's Seal, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is believed to nourish the yin, moisten the lungs, and support the kidneys and adrenal system. In TCM, the functions of the adrenal glands are often associated with the "kidney" system, which encompasses multiple physiological processes beyond the anatomical kidneys. Polygonatum kingianum is traditionally used as a tonic to address fatigue, weakness, and symptoms thought to be related to adrenal insufficiency or "kidney deficiency." However, direct scientific evidence linking Polygonatum kingianum to adrenal gland support is limited. Some preliminary pharmacological studies indicate antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and adaptogenic effects, which could theoretically support adrenal function, but robust clinical trials are lacking. Most of the justification for its use in supporting the adrenal glands comes from centuries of empirical use and inclusion in multi-herb formulations targeting vitality and stress adaptation in traditional medicine. Thus, while the traditional foundation is strong, scientific validation remains weak, and its efficacy for supporting the adrenal glands specifically is not conclusively established in modern biomedical research.
