Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Polygonatum species, commonly known as Solomon's Seal, have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other herbal traditions. In TCM, species such as Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum odoratum are considered to "nourish Yin" and support various organ systems, including the kidneys. The concept of "kidney" in TCM is often associated with vitality, stress response, and functions that Western medicine might attribute to adrenal glands. As such, some herbalists have extrapolated this traditional use to suggest Polygonatum may support the adrenal system, especially in the context of stress adaptation or "adrenal fatigue." However, there is little to no scientific research directly investigating Polygonatum extracts for adrenal health or function in humans. The few available studies focus mainly on its effects on blood sugar, antioxidant activity, and immunomodulation. Therefore, the use of Polygonatum to support the adrenal glands is justified primarily by tradition, with the evidence based on historical usage patterns rather than scientific validation. No robust clinical studies currently confirm its efficacy or mechanism for this specific purpose.
