Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Porcine glandular extracts, including those from the adrenal glands, have a long history of use in traditional naturopathic and alternative medicine practices. These extracts were once prominent in "organotherapy," a practice developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, based on the idea that consuming animal organs could help support the corresponding human organs. Porcine adrenal extracts were believed to help individuals with adrenal fatigue, Addison's disease, or general low energy, under the assumption that they provided missing or depleted adrenal hormones or nutrients. However, modern clinical studies validating the efficacy of porcine adrenal extracts for supporting human adrenal function are lacking. Most contemporary medical guidelines do not recognize "adrenal fatigue" as a medical diagnosis and recommend against the use of animal glandulars due to the absence of robust evidence and potential risks (such as contamination or inappropriate hormone levels). While there is historical and traditional precedent for their use, scientific validation is minimal, and safety concerns have limited their clinical application in mainstream medicine.
