Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rehmannia glutinosa has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is regarded as a tonic herb for the kidneys and adrenal system (“kidney yin”). In TCM, the kidneys are thought to govern vital energy, growth, and stress response, functions that Western medicine often associates with the adrenal glands. Rehmannia is used in various classic herbal formulas (such as Liu Wei Di Huang Wan) to address symptoms of adrenal insufficiency, fatigue, and stress-related conditions. However, despite its traditional use, there is limited direct scientific evidence supporting its impact specifically on human adrenal gland function. Most available studies on Rehmannia focus on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, often in animal models or cell cultures. Some animal studies suggest it may modulate stress hormones, but these effects have not been robustly confirmed in human clinical trials related to adrenal health. Therefore, while its use for adrenal support is primarily justified by tradition and TCM theory, the scientific evidence directly linking Rehmannia glutinosa to adrenal gland support in humans is weak to moderate at best.
