Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rhodiola crenulata has a long history of traditional use in supporting the body’s response to stress, which is indirectly linked to adrenal gland function. In traditional Tibetan and Chinese medicine, Rhodiola species, including R. crenulata, have been used as adaptogens—substances believed to enhance the body’s resilience to physical and mental stressors. The rationale is that by improving the body’s capacity to handle stress, these herbs may support the normal functioning of the adrenal glands, which play a central role in the stress response via cortisol secretion.

However, direct scientific studies specifically on R. crenulata and its effects on adrenal glands are limited. Most research has focused on its close relative, Rhodiola rosea. Some clinical and animal studies with Rhodiola species suggest possible benefits for reducing fatigue, improving mood, and modulating stress hormones, but robust evidence directly linking R. crenulata to adrenal support is sparse. Thus, its use for adrenal health is primarily justified by traditional practices rather than strong scientific validation.
