Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Himalayan salt is primarily used to support the adrenal glands based on traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific evidence. In traditional and alternative health circles, it is believed that natural salts like Himalayan salt (which contains trace minerals in addition to sodium chloride) help maintain electrolyte balance and support adrenal function, especially in individuals experiencing adrenal fatigue or chronic stress. The rationale is that the adrenal glands, which help regulate the body's stress response and electrolyte levels via hormones like aldosterone, may benefit from adequate sodium intake.

However, there is little to no scientific research specifically validating the use of Himalayan salt for direct adrenal support. While sodium is an essential electrolyte necessary for healthy adrenal function and overall fluid balance, the trace minerals found in Himalayan salt are present in such small quantities that their physiological impact is likely negligible. Most scientific literature supports adequate (but not excessive) sodium intake for general health, but does not endorse Himalayan salt or any specific salt type for adrenal health. The concept of "adrenal fatigue" itself is not widely accepted in mainstream medicine and lacks scientific validation. Thus, while the use of Himalayan salt for adrenal support is rooted in tradition, the evidence for its effectiveness is weak.
