Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Salt (sodium chloride) has been traditionally recommended by some alternative health practitioners and in folk medicine for supporting adrenal function, particularly in the context of "adrenal fatigue" or low cortisol states. The reasoning is based on the role of the adrenal glands in regulating sodium balance through aldosterone, a hormone involved in sodium retention and potassium excretion. When adrenal function is believed to be suboptimal, some advocate for increased salt intake to compensate for presumed aldosterone deficiency, which could otherwise cause low blood pressure, fatigue, and salt craving.

However, the concept of "adrenal fatigue" is not recognized by mainstream medicine, and there is little scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of salt to treat adrenal gland dysfunction except in clearly defined medical conditions such as Addison’s disease (primary adrenal insufficiency). In Addison’s disease, patients can experience salt wasting and are sometimes advised to increase dietary sodium under medical supervision. Outside of this context, routine salt supplementation for adrenal support lacks robust clinical validation.

In summary, while there is historical and traditional reasoning behind using salt to support adrenal function, the evidence is limited outside of specific, medically-diagnosed adrenal insufficiency, and general supplementation is not broadly supported by scientific research.
