Evidence supporting the use of: Sarsaparilla (mixed)
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sarsaparilla (a term used for various species in the Smilax genus) has been traditionally used in various herbal systems, particularly in Central and South American folk medicine, as a general tonic and adaptogen. Historically, sarsaparilla was believed to support the body’s resilience to stress and fatigue, which are functions often attributed to adrenal health in modern alternative medicine. However, there is little to no direct scientific evidence demonstrating that sarsaparilla specifically supports adrenal gland function or hormone production. Most traditional uses centered on its purported ability to purify the blood, support skin health, and act as a general strengthener rather than targeting the adrenal glands specifically. Modern herbal marketing sometimes includes sarsaparilla in adrenal support blends, likely due to its reputation as an adaptogen, but this is not strongly rooted in either clinical research or deep historical precedent focused on the adrenal system. As a result, the justification for using sarsaparilla to support adrenal health remains primarily traditional, with minimal scientific validation. The evidence supporting its effectiveness for this body system is therefore weak.
