Evidence supporting the use of: Schisandrins
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Schisandrins are lignans found in the fruit of Schisandra chinensis, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries. In TCM, Schisandra is regarded as an "adaptogen," a substance believed to enhance the body's resistance to stress and support overall vitality, including the adrenal glands, which play a critical role in the body's stress response. The traditional use of Schisandra involves formulations aimed at boosting "qi" (vital energy), improving endurance, and reducing fatigue—all overlapping with the concept of adrenal support.
Scientific research on Schisandrins has focused primarily on their antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and neuroprotective effects. Some animal studies suggest that Schisandra extracts may modulate stress responses by influencing the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. There are no well-designed human trials demonstrating a direct effect of Schisandrins on adrenal function or verifying their efficacy in supporting adrenal health. The belief in Schisandrins for adrenal support is therefore rooted in traditional use rather than scientific validation. For these reasons, the evidence supporting Schisandrins for adrenal support is rated as low (2 out of 5), reflecting a strong traditional basis but limited scientific corroboration.
