Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora or Scutellaria baicalensis) is primarily used in traditional herbal medicine as a calming nervine, believed to help soothe the nervous system and reduce anxiety and stress. In the context of adrenal gland support, its use is mostly based on traditional herbalist perspectives that associate chronic stress with "adrenal fatigue" and suggest nervine herbs to support the body's stress response. However, there is little direct scientific evidence linking skullcap to improved adrenal gland function or direct support of the adrenal glands. Most available research focuses on skullcap's potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and neuroprotective properties, not on adrenal hormones or adrenal health specifically. Therefore, while skullcap may help indirectly by promoting relaxation and reducing perceived stress, its use for adrenal gland support is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
