Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin C, including its fat-soluble derivative ascorbyl palmitate, has traditionally been associated with supporting adrenal gland health. This belief is rooted in the understanding that the adrenal glands contain some of the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body and that vitamin C is used in the biosynthesis of adrenal hormones such as cortisol. Historically, practitioners of naturopathy and holistic wellness have recommended vitamin C supplementation to "support" adrenal function, particularly in situations of stress, fatigue, or so-called "adrenal fatigue" (a non-medical term). However, while it is true that vitamin C is involved in the enzymatic pathways that produce adrenal hormones, and that deficiency can impair adrenal function in animal studies and severe human deficiency (scurvy), there is little direct clinical evidence that supplemental vitamin C—especially in healthy individuals—significantly enhances adrenal function or mitigates stress. Most scientific studies focus on vitamin C’s general antioxidant properties and immune support rather than direct adrenal support. The use of ascorbyl palmitate specifically, as opposed to standard ascorbic acid, has not been shown to offer unique adrenal benefits. Thus, while the association is traditional and has some physiological plausibility, robust scientific validation in humans is lacking.
