Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin C (calcium ascorbate) is commonly associated with adrenal gland support, both in alternative health circles and in some scientific literature. The adrenal glands contain high concentrations of vitamin C, and this nutrient is essential for the synthesis of several adrenal hormones, particularly cortisol and catecholamines, which are critical in the body’s stress response. Scientific studies, mostly in animals, have shown that vitamin C levels in the adrenal glands decrease during stress, suggesting increased utilization. Some limited human studies indicate that vitamin C supplementation may help modulate cortisol production during acute stress and support the body’s response to physical and psychological challenges. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and while the biochemical rationale is strong, clear evidence that supplementation enhances adrenal function or alleviates adrenal fatigue is insufficient. Thus, while the use of vitamin C for adrenal support has a scientific basis in terms of physiology, the direct clinical benefit of supplementation specifically for adrenal health is not conclusively demonstrated. The evidence is rated as 2 out of 5 due to this limited but plausible support.
