Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin C (mixed ascorbates)
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid and its mixed ascorbate forms) is scientifically recognized as an essential nutrient involved in numerous physiological processes, including those related to the adrenal glands. The adrenal cortex contains among the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body. During periods of physical or emotional stress, the adrenal glands use vitamin C to synthesize stress hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline, and noradrenaline. Animal studies have demonstrated that vitamin C levels in the adrenal glands decrease during stress, and supplementation can help restore these levels. In humans, observational studies indicate that vitamin C depletion may occur during chronic stress, and supplementation can normalize plasma and tissue vitamin C concentrations. Some small-scale clinical trials suggest that vitamin C supplementation may reduce the secretion of cortisol in response to acute stress and improve subjective stress responses, but evidence is not robust or universally conclusive. There is also a long history of vitamin C being recommended by integrative and naturopathic practitioners for "adrenal support," though the phrase itself is not well-defined in scientific literature. While there is a clear physiological role for vitamin C in adrenal hormone synthesis and stress response, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically evaluating vitamin C supplementation for adrenal gland function in humans are limited. Thus, the use of vitamin C for adrenal support is based on plausible biochemical mechanisms and some supporting evidence, but definitive clinical validation is lacking.
