Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is commonly associated with adrenal gland support, and there is a scientific basis for this connection. The adrenal glands contain some of the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body, which they use in the synthesis of hormones such as cortisol, particularly during periods of stress. Research in animals and humans indicates that vitamin C is involved in the biosynthesis of catecholamines and corticosteroids, essential adrenal hormones. Some studies have shown that vitamin C levels drop in the adrenal glands during stress and that supplementation can help restore these levels. However, direct evidence that vitamin C supplementation improves adrenal function or alleviates adrenal fatigue in humans is limited and largely theoretical. Most clinical studies examining vitamin C's role in stress response are small or preliminary, and there is no consensus that supplementation leads to significant health benefits in otherwise healthy people. Thus, while there is scientific plausibility and some supportive data, the overall quality and quantity of evidence for vitamin C as a specific adrenal support supplement is modest, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
