Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamins, particularly vitamin C and B vitamins, are commonly associated with supporting adrenal gland function. Scientifically, the adrenal glands use vitamin C in the synthesis of cortisol and other hormones, and they contain some of the highest concentrations of vitamin C in the body. Experimental studies have shown that vitamin C is rapidly depleted from the adrenals during stress, and animal research indicates that supplementation can help restore adrenal vitamin C levels and potentially modulate stress responses. However, robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating that vitamin C supplementation improves adrenal function or stress adaptation are lacking. Similarly, B vitamins, especially B5 (pantothenic acid) and B6, are involved in adrenal hormone production and energy metabolism. Some historical and small-scale studies suggest B vitamins may help with symptoms of “adrenal fatigue” (a non-medical term), but there is limited high-quality evidence supporting their use for adrenal disorders such as Addison’s disease or Cushing’s syndrome.

Overall, there is a scientific rationale for the involvement of certain vitamins in adrenal gland physiology, but the direct clinical benefit of vitamin supplementation for adrenal support in healthy individuals or those with adrenal disorders is not strongly established. Thus, the evidence level is moderate to low, and vitamin supplementation should not replace medical treatment for adrenal conditions.
