Eleuthero Root (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as Siberian ginseng, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Russia and China, as an adaptogen—a substance believed to help the body resist physical, environmental, and emotional stress. Adaptogens were historically valued for their potential to support stamina, endurance, and resilience, and thus were thought to indirectly support the adrenal glands, which are central to the body's stress response. However, while Eleuthero has been studied for general adaptogenic effects and potential to modulate stress hormones (such as cortisol), there is limited direct scientific evidence linking Eleuthero specifically to support of the adrenal medulla—the part of the adrenal gland responsible for secreting adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline. Most clinical research focuses on Eleuthero’s role in improving mental and physical performance under stress, rather than targeting adrenal medulla function directly. Thus, its use for supporting the adrenal medulla is primarily rooted in traditional concepts rather than validated by modern scientific research. The evidence for its efficacy in this specific context remains weak and largely anecdotal.
