Evidence supporting the use of: Boerhavia diffussa
For the health condition: Afterbirth Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Boerhavia diffusa (commonly known as Punarnava) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, and it is sometimes recommended for women's health, including for conditions associated with childbirth. In some traditional practices, especially in South Asia, Boerhavia diffusa is suggested to support uterine health and recovery after delivery, which may include helping with afterbirth pain (the discomfort and cramping that occurs as the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size).
The justification for its use in this context is largely anecdotal and rooted in traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys. Classical Ayurvedic literature lists Punarnava as a 'rasayana' (rejuvenative), diuretic, and anti-inflammatory herb, and it is thought to help in eliminating retained lochia and promoting uterine involution. However, direct references to its use specifically for afterbirth pain are limited and are generally found in compilations of folk and regional herbal remedies rather than in canonical Ayurvedic treatises.
Scientific studies on Boerhavia diffusa have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antispasmodic effects in animal models, which could, in theory, support its use for pain and uterine cramping. However, there is no direct clinical evidence in the biomedical literature that confirms its efficacy or safety specifically for afterbirth pain in postpartum women. Therefore, its use for this indication is justified by tradition, with only indirect pharmacological rationale from preclinical studies.
