Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Capillary Artemisia (Artemisia capillaris), also known as Yin Chen Hao in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is traditionally used for a variety of ailments, including liver diseases and some gynecological conditions. Its use in the context of afterbirth pain (the uterine cramping and discomfort following childbirth) is primarily rooted in traditional Chinese medical practice. In TCM, Artemisia is thought to "clear heat," "remove dampness," and "regulate the flow of Qi," and it is sometimes included in herbal formulas intended to support recovery after childbirth. However, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically validating the use of Artemisia capillaris for afterbirth pain. Most available research focuses on its hepatoprotective and anti-inflammatory effects rather than analgesic or uterotonic properties relevant to afterbirth pain. While some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and spasmolytic effects, these findings have not been specifically linked to postpartum uterine pain in clinical trials. Therefore, the use of Capillary Artemisia for afterbirth pain is best described as traditional, and the supporting evidence remains modest and indirect.
