Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Plumbago
For the health condition: Afterbirth Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Plumbago (Plumbago zeylanica, known as "Bai Hua She She Cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has been traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine for a variety of conditions, including to support the management of afterbirth pain (postpartum pain). In classical Chinese medical texts, Chinese Plumbago is sometimes included in herbal formulations aimed at invigorating blood circulation and dispelling blood stasis, both of which are believed to be important in alleviating pain after childbirth. The rationale is rooted in traditional concepts of "moving blood" to reduce retained lochia (postpartum uterine discharge) and promote uterine involution.
However, scientific validation for this specific use is limited. While some laboratory studies have investigated anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of Plumbago species, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for afterbirth pain is lacking. The use for this indication is therefore primarily based on traditional knowledge and historical use within Chinese medicine rather than modern scientific research. The evidence rating is given as 2, reflecting that the traditional use is well documented, but scientific substantiation is minimal. Care should be taken with this herb, as it contains compounds (such as plumbagin) that can be toxic in higher doses.
