Evidence supporting the use of: Rubia yunnanensis
For the health condition: Afterbirth Pain
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rubia yunnanensis, known as "Yunnan madder," has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly for conditions involving blood stasis and pain, including afterbirth pain (postpartum uterine pain). TCM practitioners use Rubia species to "activate blood," "dispel stasis," and relieve pain. Historical texts and modern TCM formulations often include Rubia yunnanensis as an ingredient for gynecological complaints such as dysmenorrhea and postpartum pain. The plant's roots contain anthraquinones and other compounds believed to have anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, although these effects are better established in laboratory and animal studies than in rigorous clinical trials.
However, there is limited high-quality scientific evidence directly validating the efficacy of Rubia yunnanensis for afterbirth pain. Most supporting evidence is derived from traditional use and small-scale pharmacological studies that suggest potential for anti-inflammatory and uterotonic effects. There are few, if any, randomized controlled trials specific to this indication. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by tradition, and while there are plausible mechanisms and some pharmacological data, the overall level of scientific evidence is low.
