Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of skin conditions, including age spots (also known as liver spots or solar lentigines). In folk medicine, chamomile is often applied topically for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and skin-brightening properties. The use of chamomile for age spots is primarily rooted in its traditional application, where it is believed that its natural compounds, such as apigenin, bisabolol, and chamazulene, can help reduce hyperpigmentation and promote a more even skin tone. However, scientific evidence supporting chamomile’s efficacy specifically for the treatment or reduction of age spots is minimal. While some laboratory studies suggest that chamomile may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that could theoretically benefit the skin, there are no well-controlled clinical trials demonstrating its effectiveness in fading or preventing age spots. Most of the support for chamomile’s use in this context comes from anecdotal reports and traditional herbal practices rather than modern scientific research. Therefore, while chamomile is generally regarded as safe when used topically and may provide some skin-soothing effects, its ability to treat age spots cannot be strongly substantiated by current scientific evidence.
