Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific interest in flavonoids for skin health, including hyperpigmentation such as age spots (also called liver spots or solar lentigines), has grown in recent years. Research indicates that flavonoids, such as quercetin and rutin, can inhibit tyrosinase, an enzyme involved in melanin production, thereby potentially reducing the appearance of hyperpigmented spots. Some in vitro (test tube) and animal studies have demonstrated that topical or orally administered flavonoids may protect against UV-induced skin damage and decrease melanin synthesis.

However, robust clinical evidence in humans for the treatment or prevention of age spots specifically is limited. While certain cosmetic products containing flavonoids are marketed for skin brightening or anti-aging effects, controlled clinical trials demonstrating significant efficacy in reducing age spots are sparse. Most human studies focus on flavonoids’ general photoprotective and antioxidant roles rather than direct depigmentation effects. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and preliminary data, the current level of evidence supporting the use of flavonoids specifically for age spots is modest, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5.
