Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 3

Fruit acids, also known as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), include compounds such as glycolic acid (from sugar cane), lactic acid (from milk), citric acid (from citrus fruits), and others. Mixed fruit acid preparations are commonly used in dermatology and cosmetic products for their exfoliating properties. Scientific studies have demonstrated that AHAs can improve the appearance of age spots (also known as solar lentigines) by promoting epidermal exfoliation and accelerating skin cell turnover, which helps to disperse melanin more evenly across the skin. Clinical trials and reviews have shown that regular application of AHA-containing creams and chemical peels can reduce the visibility of hyperpigmented lesions, including age spots, over the course of several weeks to months. The improvement is attributed to the removal of the outer, pigmented skin layers and the stimulation of new, evenly pigmented skin growth. While AHAs are widely used in dermatological practice and over-the-counter products, the strength of evidence varies depending on concentration, formulation, and study design. Overall, there is moderate scientific support for the use of mixed fruit acids to treat age spots, though results are not guaranteed for all individuals and potential side effects such as irritation and increased sun sensitivity should be considered.
