Evidence supporting the use of: Polypodium leucotomos
For the health condition: Age Spots
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Polypodium leucotomos is a tropical fern whose extract has been studied for its photoprotective and antioxidant properties, particularly in relation to skin health and aging. Scientific evidence indicates that oral supplementation with Polypodium leucotomos extract can help reduce the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the skin, including the formation of age spots (also known as solar lentigines or hyperpigmentation). Several randomized, placebo-controlled trials and in vitro studies have shown that Polypodium leucotomos extract decreases UV-induced DNA damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the skin, all of which are factors in the development of age spots.
Additionally, some clinical studies have noted a reduction in the appearance of hyperpigmented lesions and improved evenness of skin tone in individuals taking Polypodium leucotomos extract, especially when combined with sunscreen and other sun protection measures. The mechanism appears to involve inhibition of melanin production and modulation of inflammatory pathways that contribute to pigmentation changes.
Despite these promising findings, the overall evidence base is still moderate: while multiple studies support its use, many have small sample sizes or combine the extract with other treatments, making it difficult to isolate its specific effects. Nonetheless, the current scientific literature provides a reasonable foundation for the use of Polypodium leucotomos in supporting the treatment or prevention of age spots, particularly as part of a broader photoprotection strategy.
