Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea Buckthorn Oil is sometimes promoted for the treatment or prevention of age spots (also known as liver spots or solar lentigines), which are areas of hyperpigmentation that develop with age and sun exposure. The oil is rich in vitamins (notably vitamin E and C), carotenoids, and fatty acids, which are thought to support skin health and regeneration.

Several laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that Sea Buckthorn Oil possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. These effects can theoretically contribute to improved skin appearance and support the skin’s defense against photodamage, which is a key factor in the formation of age spots. Some small clinical studies and case reports suggest that topical application may improve skin hydration and elasticity, and possibly assist in fading hyperpigmentation, but these studies are limited in size and methodological quality.

There is not yet robust clinical evidence specifically demonstrating a significant effect of Sea Buckthorn Oil on age spots in humans. Most claims are based on the oil's general effects on skin health and its antioxidant properties, which may help reduce further oxidative damage from UV exposure. While the traditional use of Sea Buckthorn in skin care is longstanding, its direct efficacy for treating age spots remains to be validated in larger, high-quality clinical trials.
