Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Vitamin E has traditionally been used in skincare to address hyperpigmentation issues such as age spots (also called liver spots or solar lentigines). The rationale is based on its antioxidant properties, which may help protect skin from oxidative damage caused by UV rays—a key factor in the development of age spots. Historically, topical Vitamin E (often in the form of oils or creams) has been recommended in folk and alternative medicine as a remedy for various skin blemishes, including age spots.

However, scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of Vitamin E (especially when unspecified as to form or purity) for lightening or treating age spots is limited and inconsistent. Most clinical studies have not demonstrated significant improvement of age spots with Vitamin E alone, and any reported effects are generally modest. Some studies suggest that when Vitamin E is combined with other compounds (such as Vitamin C or hydroquinone), there may be a greater effect on hyperpigmentation. Nonetheless, as a standalone treatment, Vitamin E is primarily supported by tradition rather than robust clinical evidence.
