Evidence supporting the use of: 7-hydroxymatairesinol (HMR)
For the health condition: Aging (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
7-Hydroxymatairesinol (HMR) is a plant lignan predominantly found in the heartwood of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Its use for aging prevention is based on its function as a phytoestrogen and antioxidant. Scientific interest in HMR centers on its ability to modulate oxidative stress, inflammation, and estrogen receptor pathways, all of which are implicated in the aging process. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that HMR and its metabolites can reduce oxidative damage in cells and tissues, and animal models suggest potential benefits for cardiovascular health, bone density, and cognitive function—all areas related to healthy aging.
However, evidence in humans is limited. A few small clinical trials have explored HMR's effects on markers of metabolic health and oxidative stress in postmenopausal women, with some positive results, but these studies are preliminary and not directly linked to broad anti-aging effects. There is no large-scale or long-term clinical evidence demonstrating that HMR supplementation delays aging or prevents age-related diseases in humans. The use of HMR for aging prevention is therefore supported by mechanistic rationale and promising animal studies, but human data are still lacking. Thus, current scientific evidence justifies only a cautious optimism, and more robust clinical trials are necessary to establish its efficacy for aging prevention in humans.
