Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Astragaloside—primarily astragaloside IV—is a bioactive compound extracted from Astragalus membranaceus, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its use in aging or aging prevention is supported by a growing body of preclinical scientific evidence, although robust clinical validation is currently limited. In animal and cellular studies, astragaloside IV has demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and telomerase-activating properties. These effects are relevant to aging because oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and telomere shortening are key contributors to cellular senescence and age-related decline (PMID: 31654294; PMID: 29594388).

Notably, astragaloside IV has been shown to activate telomerase in vitro and in animal models, potentially slowing telomere shortening, which is associated with cellular aging. It also appears to modulate pathways such as NF-κB and Nrf2, contributing to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, direct evidence from human clinical trials on its effects in aging or prevention of age-related diseases is minimal, and most data are extrapolated from animal studies or in vitro experiments. Thus, while its use for aging prevention is underpinned by plausible scientific mechanisms and encouraging preclinical data, the evidence is not robust enough (i.e., lacks large, high-quality human studies) to warrant a higher score.
