Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Epimedium, commonly known as Horny Goat Weed, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for various health conditions, including those associated with aging such as fatigue, sexual decline, and bone weakness. The traditional rationale for its use in aging is rooted in its reputed ability to "tonify the kidney" and "strengthen yang," which are concepts in TCM associated with vitality, sexual health, and longevity. While Epimedium is widely used in East Asia as a herbal remedy for age-related decline, scientific research specifically targeting its anti-aging effects in humans is limited and largely preliminary. Most of the modern studies are in vitro or animal-based, suggesting antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, as well as potential benefits for bone health due to compounds like icariin. However, direct clinical evidence supporting its efficacy for aging prevention in humans remains insufficient. Thus, its use for aging is primarily justified by tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
