Evidence supporting the use of: Ginseng, Oriental
For the health condition: Aging (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Oriental ginseng (Panax ginseng) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in China and Korea, as a tonic to promote vitality, longevity, and general well-being—traits often associated with anti-aging. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Ben Cao Jing" (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) describe ginseng as a substance that "nourishes the five viscera" and "prolongs life." Its use for aging prevention is thus rooted in centuries of traditional practice, rather than rigorous scientific validation.
Modern scientific studies have explored ginseng’s potential anti-aging effects, focusing on its ginsenosides (active components). Some in vitro and animal studies suggest antioxidant properties, improvement in cognitive function, and modulation of immune response, all of which could hypothetically contribute to slowing age-related decline. However, robust clinical trials in humans are limited, and existing studies are generally small or of low methodological quality. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses conclude that while there is biological plausibility and some preliminary evidence, there is insufficient high-quality clinical data to firmly support ginseng’s use for aging prevention. Therefore, ginseng’s reputation as an anti-aging agent is primarily justified by traditional use, with modest scientific support at best.
