Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as eleuthero, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Russia and China, as a general tonic and adaptogen. Traditionally, it has been used to promote vitality, enhance physical and mental performance, and delay the effects of aging, although the specific concept of "anti-aging" is relatively modern. Folk medicine often regarded Siberian ginseng as a remedy to increase resilience to stress and to maintain health during aging, based on its perceived ability to restore balance and energy.
Scientific studies on Siberian ginseng and aging are limited and generally of low quality. Some animal studies and a few small human trials have suggested potential benefits such as enhanced immune function, improved mental performance, and reduced fatigue. However, direct evidence supporting its efficacy in preventing or delaying aging in humans is lacking. Most clinical studies focus on its adaptogenic properties rather than anti-aging effects specifically. Comprehensive systematic reviews have found insufficient robust evidence to support the use of Siberian ginseng for aging prevention. Thus, while its use for this purpose is rooted in tradition, scientific validation remains limited and inconclusive.
