Evidence supporting the use of: L-carnosine
For the health condition: Aging (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
L-carnosine is a naturally occurring dipeptide composed of beta-alanine and histidine, found in high concentrations in muscle and brain tissues. Its use in aging prevention is primarily supported by scientific rationale, though the evidence is still preliminary and mostly derived from laboratory and animal studies rather than large-scale clinical trials in humans. L-carnosine possesses antioxidant properties, allowing it to scavenge reactive oxygen species and chelate metal ions, which are processes believed to contribute to cellular aging. In vitro studies have demonstrated that L-carnosine can delay cellular senescence and reduce the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are implicated in age-related tissue damage and chronic diseases.
Animal research has shown that supplementation with L-carnosine may extend lifespan and improve markers of healthspan, such as cognitive function and physical endurance, in rodents. However, evidence in humans is limited. Some small studies have suggested potential benefits for cognitive function and skin appearance, but robust clinical data supporting its use specifically for aging prevention are lacking. Overall, while the mechanistic basis for L-carnosine’s anti-aging effects is scientifically plausible, the current level of evidence in humans is insufficient for strong clinical recommendations, placing it at a moderate level of scientific support (rated 2 out of 5).
