Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lignans are a group of polyphenolic compounds found in plants, particularly in seeds (especially flaxseed), whole grains, and vegetables. Their use for aging prevention is supported by some scientific evidence, although the evidence is not robust. Lignans are phytoestrogens, meaning they can weakly mimic or modulate the action of estrogen in the body. Several observational studies and some small clinical trials suggest that lignan consumption may be associated with reduced risks of chronic diseases related to aging, such as cardiovascular disease, certain cancers (notably breast and prostate cancer), and possibly cognitive decline. These effects are thought to be due to lignans' antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hormone-modulating properties.

However, most of the research is preliminary, often involving animal models or in vitro studies rather than large-scale human trials. While some meta-analyses and reviews suggest potential benefits, they also note significant heterogeneity in study design, lignan sources, and measured outcomes. There is little direct evidence that lignan supplementation alone can prevent or reverse aging, but their inclusion as part of a plant-rich diet appears to contribute to healthy aging by supporting cardiovascular, hormonal, and possibly cognitive health. Overall, lignans show promise, but current evidence is moderate and not sufficient for strong clinical recommendations.
