Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Placenta, particularly human and animal placenta extracts, has been used in traditional medicine systems, especially in East Asian cultures, for centuries to promote vitality, rejuvenation, and anti-aging. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), placenta (commonly referred to as "Zi He Che") is believed to nourish blood, enhance energy (Qi), and slow the aging process. These uses are based largely on anecdotal evidence and long-standing cultural practices rather than rigorous scientific validation.

Modern commercial products containing placental extracts (from sheep, deer, or human sources) are marketed for their purported anti-aging properties, such as improving skin elasticity, reducing wrinkles, and enhancing overall skin appearance. Some laboratory studies suggest that placental extracts may contain growth factors, cytokines, and nutrients that could contribute to skin regeneration and repair. However, the majority of available research consists of small-scale studies, in vitro experiments, or animal data, and robust clinical evidence in humans remains limited.

Overall, while the use of placenta for anti-aging is deeply rooted in tradition and supported by some preliminary studies, there is a lack of high-quality, large-scale clinical trials to conclusively validate its efficacy and safety for preventing aging in humans.
