Triterpenes are a large class of naturally occurring compounds found in a variety of plants, including ginseng, licorice, and olive oil. Their use in aging prevention is supported by a growing body of scientific evidence, though most of the research is preclinical (in vitro or animal models), with limited high-quality human trials to date. Triterpenes such as ursolic acid, oleanolic acid, and betulinic acid have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective effects in laboratory studies. These properties are thought to counteract some of the cellular mechanisms that contribute to aging, such as oxidative stress and chronic inflammation.

For example, ursolic acid has been shown to improve mitochondrial function, promote autophagy, and reduce markers of aging in cell and animal models. Some studies suggest triterpenes may protect against age-related diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders and metabolic syndrome, by modulating signaling pathways involved in cellular senescence and apoptosis. However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking, and the majority of studies focus on biological mechanisms rather than direct measures of aging or lifespan extension. As a result, triterpenes are considered promising but not yet proven agents for aging prevention in humans.
