Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially within European folk practices. It has been utilized for a variety of ailments, primarily as an astringent, tonic, and remedy for digestive issues. Its association with supporting or treating alcoholism primarily stems from traditional herbalist literature rather than robust scientific evidence. In some folk traditions, agrimony was believed to support liver health and aid in the management of withdrawal symptoms, which are relevant to alcoholism. However, these claims are largely anecdotal, with little to no clinical research directly evaluating agrimony’s efficacy in treating or supporting recovery from alcoholism. Modern phytotherapy references may mention its use for liver complaints, but again, clinical trials confirming these effects—especially in the context of alcohol dependence—are lacking. Thus, while agrimony is sometimes suggested in traditional herbal protocols for alcoholism, there is minimal scientific validation to support these claims.
