Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) has been investigated for its potential in supporting or treating food allergies, particularly in children. Scientific evidence suggests that certain Bifidobacterium strains may help modulate immune responses and promote tolerance to allergens. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have examined the effects of probiotics, including Bifidobacterium, on allergic outcomes such as atopic dermatitis, cow's milk allergy, and other food allergies. Some studies indicate that supplementation with Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics, especially in infants at risk or with diagnosed food allergies, can reduce the incidence or severity of allergic symptoms. The proposed mechanisms include enhancement of gut barrier function, modulation of gut microbiota, and regulation of immune responses (e.g., increasing T-regulatory cells and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines).

However, the evidence is mixed and strain-specific. Not all studies have shown benefit, and differences in probiotic formulations, dosages, populations, and study designs make it difficult to draw firm conclusions. Major clinical guidelines currently do not universally recommend Bifidobacterium for food allergy prevention or treatment, but do acknowledge its potential, especially in high-risk infants. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis and some supportive data, the overall quality and consistency of evidence is moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
