Evidence supporting the use of: Clostridium butyricum
For the health condition: Allergies (food)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clostridium butyricum is a probiotic bacterium that has been investigated for its potential role in modulating immune responses and supporting the gut barrier, which are relevant to allergic diseases, including food allergies. The scientific interest largely arises from its ability to produce butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) known for its anti-inflammatory effects and support of regulatory T-cell (Treg) development. Several animal studies have demonstrated that C. butyricum administration can attenuate food allergy symptoms, reduce intestinal inflammation, and suppress IgE production, likely by enhancing gut barrier integrity and promoting immune tolerance.
However, human clinical data are limited. A small number of pilot studies and case reports have suggested that C. butyricum supplementation may benefit children with atopic dermatitis or cow’s milk allergy, especially when used alongside other probiotics or as part of synbiotic formulations. These studies report improvements in symptoms and some immunological markers, but the sample sizes are small and methodologies often lack rigor.
In summary, while there is a plausible biological mechanism and promising preclinical evidence, high-quality human trials are still lacking. Therefore, the use of C. butyricum for food allergies is scientifically plausible but not yet robustly validated, reflected in a moderate evidence rating.
