Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kefir, a fermented milk drink rich in probiotics, has been investigated for its potential to modulate immune responses and improve symptoms related to food allergies. Animal studies suggest that kefir and its probiotic components can influence the gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier function, and promote regulatory T-cell responses, all of which are relevant for allergic diseases. For example, some mouse models of food allergy show reduced allergic responses after kefir supplementation, likely due to modulation of Th2-mediated immune responses and decreased IgE production. Limited human data exists, with a few small clinical studies and observational reports indicating that probiotic-rich foods, including kefir, might help in allergy prevention or symptom reduction, especially in children. However, these studies often suffer from small sample sizes, lack of controls, or use mixtures of probiotics rather than kefir specifically. There is not yet robust, large-scale clinical evidence directly supporting kefir's efficacy for treating or preventing food allergies in humans. Thus, while the scientific rationale is plausible and supported by some preclinical data, the overall level of evidence remains low (rated 2/5), and further well-controlled human studies are needed to confirm its benefit for food allergies.
