Evidence supporting the use of: Lactobacillus pentosus
For the health condition: Allergies (food)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactobacillus pentosus is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in fermented foods such as olives and certain pickled vegetables. In recent years, probiotics have been explored for their potential to modulate immune responses and, by extension, to ameliorate allergic conditions, including food allergies. Some preclinical animal studies and limited clinical data suggest that certain strains of Lactobacillus, including L. pentosus, may help modulate immune responses by enhancing regulatory T cell populations and shifting the immune balance away from the Th2 responses associated with allergies.
Specifically, a few in vitro and animal studies have reported that L. pentosus strains can decrease markers of allergic inflammation and reduce hypersensitivity reactions. For instance, a 2012 study in mice showed that oral administration of L. pentosus S-PT84 suppressed IgE production and allergic symptoms. However, high-quality human clinical trials directly investigating the effects of L. pentosus on food allergies are lacking. Most human data on probiotics and allergy focus on other species, such as Lactobacillus rhamnosus or Lactobacillus casei.
Therefore, while there is some preliminary scientific rationale and preclinical evidence supporting the use of L. pentosus for allergies, the overall evidence base—especially in humans—is weak and not sufficiently robust to warrant strong recommendations. More well-designed clinical trials are needed to substantiate these findings.
