Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus plantarum has been investigated for its effects on food allergies, and there is some emerging scientific evidence suggesting potential benefits, although the evidence is currently limited and not definitive. Several preclinical studies—primarily in animal models—have demonstrated that L. plantarum may help modulate immune responses associated with food allergies. These effects are believed to be due to its ability to influence gut microbiota composition, strengthen the intestinal barrier, and promote regulatory T-cell responses that may reduce allergic inflammation. Some small-scale clinical studies in humans have shown that supplementation with L. plantarum can help improve symptoms in patients with food allergies or atopic conditions, possibly by reducing levels of inflammatory cytokines and enhancing oral tolerance. However, results across studies are inconsistent, and most clinical trials have been small or have used L. plantarum in combination with other probiotics, making it difficult to attribute effects to this strain alone. At this time, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting the use of L. plantarum for food allergies, high-quality, large-scale human trials are still needed to confirm efficacy and determine optimal dosing and strains.
