Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Amor seco refers to several plants in the genus Bidens, most commonly Bidens pilosa or Bidens odorata. In traditional medicine, especially in Latin America and parts of Africa and Asia, Bidens pilosa has been used for a variety of ailments, including respiratory allergies, asthma, and other inflammatory conditions. Traditional herbalists have employed decoctions or infusions of the leaves and aerial parts to help alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, congestion, and breathing difficulties associated with allergic reactions. The rationale for its use is based on anecdotal reports and ethnobotanical surveys rather than controlled clinical trials.

Some preclinical studies have shown that Bidens pilosa possesses anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which could theoretically benefit allergic conditions. For example, in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated inhibition of certain inflammatory pathways and a reduction in markers of allergy. However, there is currently insufficient clinical evidence from human studies to confirm its efficacy or safety for treating respiratory allergies. Thus, the use of Amor seco for allergies is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with limited scientific support at the preclinical level but a lack of robust clinical validation.
