Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Aralia, particularly Aralia racemosa (American spikenard) and related species, has a history of traditional use in North American indigenous medicine and Western herbalism. Traditionally, various Aralia species were used to relieve respiratory complaints, which could include symptoms now recognized as allergic in nature, such as coughs and mild bronchial irritation. Preparations from Aralia roots or leaves were employed as expectorants and mild stimulants for respiratory health. However, the evidence supporting its specific use for allergies (particularly respiratory allergies) is based almost entirely on this traditional use and anecdotal reports, rather than on controlled clinical trials or rigorous pharmacological studies. There is a lack of scientific research directly validating its effectiveness for allergic respiratory conditions, and no substantial modern clinical evidence exists to recommend it for this purpose. Thus, while Aralia is traditionally used for general respiratory support, its specific application to allergic conditions is not well-substantiated by science.
