Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Artemisia herba-alba, commonly known as white wormwood, has a long history of use in traditional medicine across North Africa and the Middle East. Its traditional applications include treating gastrointestinal disorders, diabetes, and various infectious diseases. In some traditional practices, Artemisia herba-alba has also been used to address respiratory ailments, which indirectly encompasses allergic symptoms such as cough, congestion, and bronchial irritation. However, the evidence supporting its use specifically for respiratory allergies is sparse and mainly anecdotal. Most of the scientific research on Artemisia herba-alba focuses on its antimicrobial, antiparasitic, and antioxidant properties, with limited studies investigating its effects on allergic responses or immune modulation relevant to respiratory allergies. No robust clinical trials or animal studies have directly demonstrated efficacy for allergy treatment. Thus, its use for respiratory allergies is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine without strong scientific backing, and the overall quality of evidence remains low.
