Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Asian Plantain (Plantago asiatica) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese and Korean herbal practices, for supporting respiratory health, including the management of allergy-related symptoms such as cough, congestion, and phlegm. Traditional texts often describe Plantago asiatica seeds and leaves as remedies for "clearing heat" and "removing phlegm," which, in the context of traditional medicine, includes symptoms that overlap with respiratory allergies. However, while there are limited preclinical studies that suggest anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory properties of Plantago asiatica extracts, there is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to definitively support its efficacy for allergic respiratory conditions in humans. Most modern scientific studies have focused on its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, primarily in animal models or in vitro. Thus, its use for allergies is justified primarily by tradition, and the evidence from the scientific literature is weak or indirect. More rigorous clinical research is needed to validate its effectiveness for allergy support.
